I recently watched an interview with Lena Dunham where she explained about her outfit "My bra is on the west coast, my pants are on the east, and that is a metaphor for my life." Well said, Lena, because this couldn't be more accurate regarding my life too. Besides being a Wellness Coach in NYC and lover of all things brunch and wine related, I spend a lot of time at my advertising job traveling to Los Angeles every few weeks, and living a large portion of my life out in the sunny City of Angels.
Stepping out of a normal routine when you are on-the-go is why most people feel groggy and worn down. You are not in your own habitat which often affects your sleeping and eating habits. Here are a few tips and tricks to try next time you're away from home, I promise you will look and feel fab!
1. I love starting my day with a hot cup of water, a few squeezes of lemon juice, and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Drinking this concoction will keep your skin looking and feeling fresh. For an added bonus, the cayenne pepper kickstarts your metabolism for the day. This drink has replaced my addictive coffee habit on most days!
2. Don't skip your workout. Make sure you are checking in with your body and giving it some form of exercise. This is especially important if you spent hours sitting on a cramped plane. By squeezing in a workout, you will feel more energized during the day, and sleep better at night.
3. Pack your meals the same way you would at home... with a ton of fresh veggies! An easy way to do this is to order eggs mixed with whatever local, seasonal vegetables are available. This egg bowl is packed to the brim with squash blossoms, mushrooms, and roasted tomatoes. When you pack your meals with produce, you increase your vitamin intake and decrease your chance of getting sick when seat 4B sneezes on your tray table on the plane.
4. INDULGE! Live! Eat! The best part of traveling is stepping out of your comfort zone, which includes eating like the locals. LA is known for its love of raw, organic foods. I scarfed down this delicious handmade dessert of peanut butter ganache with a raw cacao crust at one of my favorite vegan joints in West Hollywood called Gracias Madre. You will get back on track when you get home, but indulging occasionally is just so comforting when I am away from NYC.
